The DDA in Ann Arbor decided in the fall 2008 to develop a program of continuous investment in downtown proper-
ties to make them more energy efficient. In the first phase A3C was one of the four firms who DDA applicants could
select from to perform a Technical Energy Assessment on their property. A3C performed 12 Audits as part of the
program identifying ECM’s that totaled over $200K with a payback of less than 2 years in 2009. A3C is also listed and
trained as an audit provider for the REBUILD Michigan Energy Assistance Program and Consumers Energy Company’s
Renewable Energy and Energy Optimization Plans.
Facility Operational Assessments Green Roof Consultants
A3C has designed several green roofs including the one for its own office. We have opted to develop our own skills to de-
sign roofs without relying on vendors as is typically the practice for others. This allows us to create green roofs that make
the best sense for our clients and allow different systems to be priced and evaluated to give our clients the best value. We
use Green Roof Services as a peer reviewer to take advantage of their 25 plus years of green roof experience. They mainly
act as a resource but during construction are on site for initial installation review and recommendations.
Building Commissioning LEED Certification Geothermal Consultants
The EPA found that geothermal systems on average are 40% greater efficiency that air source heat pumps and 48%
greater efficiency than the best gas furnace. A3C sees geoexchange systems as key in the design of energy efficient and
Net Zero Energy Buildings. We partner with experienced engineers to design right-sized systems for our clients. In an
effort to make geo more efficient and readily available in urban settings, we are working with Hardin Geotechnologies to
propose community and municipal geo utilities in Ann Arbor and neighboring communities.
USGBC LEED Application Reviewers
A3C employees have completed the Green Building Certification Institute’s (GBCI) training program to perform LEED
Application Reviews for NSF. NSF is one of eight LEED certification bodies that assist the U.S. Green Building Council
(USGBC) in reviewing LEED submissions. A3C is performing LEED reviews for the LEED-NC, CI, CS, Schools and EB-
OM.
Eco/LEED Charettes Green Restaurant Certification Professionals
A3C is one of only a few firms in the nation to be recognized as a Green Restaurant Association - Certification Pro-
fessional. We are able to assist restaurants in pursuing Green Star ratings for their facilities. In addition, we provide
restaurants with sustainable operations assessments to help identify way in which they can reduce their energy and
resource consumption and implement best practices for waste management and purchasing.
Sustainable Material Selection Solar Service Provider
As an SSP, A3C provides one-stop consulting and project management services source for solar financing, design
and construction. We have a trained team of experts on staff and consultants to design systems that best address the
unique needs of each project. This process includes assessing the potential for solar, identifying the appropriate solar
systems applications, assisting with potential funding / investor approaches, system design, equipment selection, me-
tering, production monitoring and maintenance. We also assist with identifying incentives and applying for the funds
or providing our clients legal or financial team with the information they need. We are experienced in working with
local and federal incentives and MI based utility incentives and their systems staff.
