A3C Green Wall Logo

Incorporated in Michigan in 1983, A3C is a multi-disciplinary architecture and interior design firm with a focus on sustainable design. Our work groups specialize in healthcare, education, municipal, religious, and corporate projects. The firm’s goal continues to be “partnering with clients to create responsive, sustainable solutions” through our core values of a collaborative approach, a supportive environment, quality work, and environmental stewardship.

Services

At A3C, we specialize in collaborative architecture – meaning we partner with each of our clients to develop designs that reflect their organizations’ unique culture and mission. With over 35 years of experience, we use close communication and an integrative design process to create responsive designs that solve tough problems, fit in tight budgets (and tight spaces), and make environments that really work.

Architecture & Engineering:  From master planning to construction administration we lead our clients through the entire building and/or renovation process. Our services include: Master Planning, Integrated Project Design, AE Design, Interior Design, and Contract Administration.

Interior Design:  We know that the design and feel of an environment can affect learning outcomes, work productivity, employee well-being, customer experience, and patient satisfaction. Our interior experience ranges from hospitals to tech offices, community centers to education facilities, and from worship centers to dentist offices.

Sustainability

A3C has been environmentally conscious since our founding. Our early practices included passive/active solar design, earth tempering design, and super insulation. We continually incorporate new technologies and processes into our projects. Two-thirds of our technical staff are LEED-trained and accredited sustainability experts, and we maintain a wealth of sustainable project information and practice sustainability as an extension of good, well-planned design.

Our Sustainable Services Include:

  • Energy Audits

  • Facility Assessments

  • Commissioning

  • LEED Certification

  • Green Globes Certification

  • Living Building Challenge Petal Certification

  • Net Zero Energy Design

  • Green Roofs

  • Geothermal (geoexchange) Systems

  • Solar Energy Systems

  • Stormwater Management

Leadership Team

Don Barry

Don Barry

JD, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
Senior Principal, President

Don is an Ann Arbor-based architect and attorney allowing him membership to the little-known Jefferson Society, which has a whopping 100 members nationwide. He switched from law to architectural practice in 1989 because he likes making things more than arguing. He truly believes that when like-minded people work really hard and are nice to each other, their accomplishments can have a startling effect.

Don’s passion is learning new things. He loves the details of a historic window renovation or learning how a specialized piece of medical equipment gets used. When ‘properly motivated’ he might make you a jeweled silver pendant, cedar strip kayak, sassafras dulcimer, or hand-stitched briefcase. He is a devoted husband and father, and mediocre guitarist. His happy place is Isle Royale National Park, to which he returns each fall.

Carlo Scarpa, the master of spatial sequence and intricate detail, is his favorite architect. Louis Kahn wrote, “The detail is the adoration of Nature”. That’s “Nature” with a capital “N”. To Don, Scarpa’s architecture represents a process, a journey, and a reverence for something other. Because sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination.

“Follow your bliss.” – Joseph Campbell

If you have a project or opportunity that would benefit from Don’s involvement, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Brian Winkler

Senior Principal, Board Member

In addition to being A3C’s Operations Manager, Brian is also active with the Charter Township of Commerce, where he has served on the Planning Commission as Secretary (since 2007) and as an Executive Board member of the Downtown Development Authority (since 2011). He has also been active with the Southeast Michigan Chapter of IFMA, serving as the Volunteer Chairperson for the annual Chapter Golf Outing for the past 14 years. He has managed health care projects for 35 years, 30 of these years with A3C. He and his wife, Nelia, have 2 grown children and celebrated their 35th Wedding Anniversary in 2018. Brian and Nelia also love spending time with their 2 granddaughters, Anna and Emmie. Brian enjoys golfing (albeit poorly), playing racquetball, and dabbling in tennis.

Anne Cox

Anne Cox

AIA, ACHA, EDAC, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP
Vice President

Anne grew up in Ann Arbor, went to the University of Michigan for Architecture School, and stayed to raise her family here. She and her husband have two grown kids, and two loveable cats. She is a happy Tree Town resident, who loves to watch the changing seasons throughout the year. Sustainability, Health, and Wellness, are a big part of her professional interests. Creating healthy buildings that keep people WELL and happy is a very important part of her career aspirations.

She volunteers on the Building and Property Committee at her church, Ann Arbor First United Methodist, and serves on the board of the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Huron Valley. Walking is her favorite pastime, and living close to the A3C office means walking to work! She commuted to Detroit for the last 15 years, so now she gets to switch to a pedestrian commuter!

She has always lived in Ann Arbor, but her travels have taken her to far-away places. Some of her favorite trips include: taking the Glacier Express through the Swiss Alps, hiking in Alaska and seeing the Glaciers, backpacking across Europe and taking the Eurail everywhere, visiting the top of the Burg Khalifa in Dubai and touring the beautiful Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi, in an abaya.

“Architecture is the thoughtful making of space.” ~ Louis Kahn (Architect of her favorite building, The Kimball Art Museum)

“In every walk in nature one receives far more than he seeks.” ~ John Muir

Paul Wesenberg

Paul Wesenberg

Secretary/Treasurer

As a child, Paul’s parents had a home built on a family property. As Paul watched the house go from paper to reality, he saw the magic and became inspired to pursue a career in architecture. Paul has been with A3C since his college graduation and feels blessed to have been able to watch many projects go from paper to reality, much in the same way as his childhood home. Watching the final structure come to fruition takes him back to the memories of his youth and alleviates much of the stress this industry tends to create.

As an Eagle Scout, Paul has worked to find a life dedicated to finding ways to improve his community and environment, while maintaining a level of fun and purpose. He sees his work, and the work of his colleagues, as an extension of that dedication.

“If you make listening and observation your occupation, you will gain much more than you can by talk.” – Robert Baden-Powell

“God created paper for the purpose of drawing architecture on it. Everything else is, at least for me, an abuse of paper.” – Alvar Aalto

If you have a project or opportunity that would benefit from Paul’s involvement, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
